About Mr. Michel Kelly-Gagnon

Alberta versus Ottawa: Bird eyes views from a friendly Quebecois

Michel is a French Canadian “artsy redneck” who considers himself more pro-oil and gas than most Canadian oil and gas executives. As someone who lived in Quebec his whole life, he knows a thing or two about how to challenge Ottawa and fight for more provincial autonomy. His talk will focus on what Albertans can do politically and legally to increase their province’s autonomy within the Canadian federation. He will argue for a bold strategy to get there, which includes collaborating with like-minded Quebecois autonomists. Finally, he will give his perspective on the results of the October 3 provincial election in Quebec, which might very well cause some surprises.

Michel was one of the cofounders of the Amis de la Liberté (Friends of Liberty) in the mid – 1990s, and helped relaunch the MEI as of 1997. After having been head of the MEI from 1998 to 2006, he was president of the Quebec Employers Council from March 2006 to December 2008. Michel is also a Senior Fellow at the Atlas Network and a Trustee of The John Dobson Foundation, which supports the teaching of entrepreneurial and free enterprise thinking to the general Canadian public. He is back at the helm of MEI since 2009.
