The federal government can achieve meaningful tax relief without trimming public services by putting tax simplification at the top of the budget agenda. Canadian businesses collectively spend 131 hours a year on tax compliance, costing the economy between $15 billion and $21 billion in 2024 alone. By streamlining filing requirements, raising exemption thresholds for small firms and non‑profit entities, and eliminating redundant reporting, Ottawa could slash these compliance burdens while preserving revenue.

A simpler tax code would also improve the effectiveness of fiscal policy: when the tax structure is clear and predictable, incentives to invest and hire work as intended. Policymakers should prioritize reforms that reduce administrative overhead for both taxpayers and the Canada Revenue Agency; therefore, creating a “win‑win” that boosts growth, eases the load on small businesses, and leaves more resources available for essential public programs.
