Albertans have not historically agreed with Liberal governments in Ottawa. Too often, our province has felt sidelined in national decision making. However, with Prime Minister Mark Carney now in office, there are early signs of a more constructive relationship, signs we should welcome.

Premier Danielle Smith recently reflected this on her first meeting with Prime Minister Carney, noting that she found more common ground than with any previous prime minister. That alone should give Albertans pause and perhaps hope.

At AEG, we believe this is a moment to set aside divisiveness and look for solutions. Prime Minister Carney will likely be in power for the next four to five years. Rather than falling into familiar battles, we must focus on how Alberta and Canada can move forward together.

That’s why I want to share a letter sent on behalf of AEG by our President, Catherine Brownlee. It underscores that while Alberta business leaders have not always been inspired by past Liberal governments, there is genuine optimism for constructive engagement under Prime Minister Carney’s leadership. The letter highlights progress on regulatory matters, recognition of Alberta’s energy sector, and the potential for collaboration on carbon capture initiatives. In addition, Catherine herself observed PM Carneys pragmatic style first hand during a recent trip to Edmonton, where she stayed at the same hotel.

This is not about abandoning Alberta’s priorities, it is about advancing them in a spirit of respect and cooperation. The opportunity is here. Let’s seize it.
