Every fall, during the third full week of October, Canada marks Small Business Week, a celebration of entrepreneurship, resilience, and community-driven economic growth. Originally launched by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) in 1979 with local business workshops in British Columbia, it became a national event by 1981.

Why It Matters & How to Support

This week is an opportunity to spotlight the backbone of our economy: the small businesses that create jobs, innovate, and bring vibrancy to our communities. For business owners, it is a time to engage, network, and reflect on both accomplishments and challenges. For citizens and policymakers, it is a moment to recognize that support, visibility, and encouragement are essential.

The Numbers: Canada & Alberta

  • Nationally: As of December 2023, there were approximately 1.10 million employer businesses in Canada, and 98.1% were classified as small businesses (1–99 employees).
  • In Alberta: There were 135,978 small businesses, representing 98.3% of all employer businesses in the province.
  • Definition: In Canada, a small business typically employs fewer than 100 people or earns under $5 million in annual revenue.

AEG’s Message for Small Business Week

At Alberta Enterprise Group (AEG), we honour the entrepreneurs, innovators, and community builders who form the foundation of Alberta’s economy. During Small Business Week, we encourage members, partners, and Albertans to:

  • Support a local business, buy something from them, tell them you appreciate their economic contribution.
  • Advocate for policies that reduce red tape and enable growth.
  • Celebrate entrepreneurship across both urban centres and rural communities that drive Alberta’s prosperity.

Let’s make Small Business Week not just a celebration, but a call to action, a reminder to champion the small business owners who power our province and our country.
