This past week, more than 2,000 professionals from the construction, design, and real‑estate sectors gathered in Calgary for BUILDEX Alberta. Over two dynamic days, the trade show highlighted cutting‑edge innovations, fostered cross‑industry collaboration, and showcased the leadership that drives our built environment forward. Events like this underscore how vital these sectors are to Alberta’s growth and to Canada’s broader economic foundation – while also reminding us that we must confront persistent challenges such as workforce shortages, regulatory bottlenecks, and rising construction costs that threaten competitiveness and investment.
A cornerstone of this year’s program was the partnership with the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association (ICBA) and its Alberta chapter, ICBA Alberta, an AEG member. In addition to sponsoring the event, ICBA hosted the Keynote Leaders’ Breakfast Panel, where industry executives unpacked the forces reshaping Canada’s construction landscape.
A highlight of the panel was Mike Martens, President of ICBA Alberta, who stepped onto the stage as moderator for the 3rd Annual Construction Leaders Breakfast. Drawing on his deep experience representing independent contractors across the province, Martens steered a lively discussion with 3 industry executives on the critical policy reforms needed to alleviate labour gaps, streamline permitting processes, and curb cost escalations. His insights reinforced ICBA’s reputation for data‑driven analysis and proactive advocacy – qualities that continue to shape constructive dialogue around job creation and sustainable growth.
ICBA and ICBA Alberta consistently demonstrate strong thought leadership, delivering clear, evidence‑based assessments of Canada’s construction economy and championing policies that nurture both employment and investment. You can explore their latest economic insights and advocacy initiatives here.
At AEG, we’re proud to stand with Alberta’s construction industry and the organizations that support it, including ICBA and ICBA Alberta, who continue to lead through collaboration and advocacy. These builders, innovators, and project leaders are the foundation of our communities – creating jobs, strengthening local economies, and shaping the future of our province. As we look ahead, it’s vital that we continue to support this sector by addressing the workforce, regulatory, and investment challenges it faces. Leaders like Mike Martens and many others across the industry are helping guide that conversation toward a stronger, more resilient construction economy for Alberta and for Canada.
