Recent policy changes have been introduced by the Alberta government to curb rising auto‑insurance costs, yet the measures are now being cited as the primary drivers of insurer withdrawals. The Care‑First no‑fault scheme, an annual excess‑profit rebate requirement, and a stringent rate‑cap system have been imposed, and premiums have risen to roughly $1,835 per driver, placing the province second only to Ontario in Canada.
As a result, several carriers have been forced to limit coverage or announce exits, reducing competition and limiting consumer choice. The loss of market participants is expected to pressure the remaining insurers, potentially leading to higher prices and fewer options for Albertan drivers. Policymakers are urged to reassess these regulations before further destabilisation occurs.
