Canada Day often brings with it the joyful sounds of beach parties, fireworks, and barbecues. And while those celebrations are part of our national tradition, it’s also a moment to reflect, not just on where we’ve come from, but on who continues to carry this country forward.
One of Canada’s earliest and most iconic businesses, the Hudson’s Bay Company, was founded in 1670, making it the oldest incorporated joint-stock company in North America. For generations, it was more than a store, it was the backbone of early commerce, connecting fur traders, settlers, and Indigenous communities across vast territories. But today, even HBC is facing decline, an economic symbol that longevity is never guaranteed.
This Canada Day, the story of HBC is a reminder that building a business in this country has never been easy. Behind every enterprise is a Canadian who took a risk, mortgaged a home, hired their first employee, or opened their doors with nothing but grit and optimism. And many have failed – no fanfare, no support, and no safety net. But many more keep showing up, day after day, building something from scratch.
At Alberta Enterprise Group (AEG), our members are those people. They are employers, innovators, community builders and above all else, risk takers. They represent the best of what it means to contribute to Canada’s economy and future.
So, this Canada Day, as you raise a glass or take in the fireworks, take a moment to celebrate the entrepreneurs and small business owners – they are your friends, neighbours, and fellow Canadians who are working hard to build something lasting in this great country. They are what keep the spirit of Canada alive.
Happy Canada Day from all of us at AEG.
