Canada’s economic recovery won’t be driven by policy papers alone; it will be powered by people willing to take risks, build companies, and invest in the future.

That’s why Alberta Enterprise Group (AEG) is closely aligned with the perspective shared by Derrick Hunter in his recent interview on The Hub. He argues that Canada needs to “release the animal spirits” of entrepreneurs. His message resonates strongly with AEG members across Alberta – confidence matters, and when it’s unlocked, growth follows.

Entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are already doing the heavy lifting of economic renewal. Across Alberta, SMEs are hiring locally, investing in productivity, adopting new technologies, and finding ways to compete globally – often in spite of policy uncertainty rather than because of supportive conditions. These businesses don’t ask for special treatment; they ask for clarity, predictability, and room to grow.

Hunter’s point is an important one. When governments send clear signals that investment is welcome, capital moves, jobs are created, and innovation accelerates. Conversely, when regulation becomes unpredictable or overly burdensome, confidence erodes and opportunity is delayed or lost altogether.

At AEG, we share the view that empowering entrepreneurs is not an ideological choice; it’s an economic necessity. Strong SMEs lead to resilient communities, diversified growth, and long-term prosperity for Albertans and for Canada as a whole.

Alberta has always understood the value of entrepreneurial drive. The challenge now is ensuring policy keeps pace with the ambition already present in our business community.
