Opinion: How Alberta’s small businesses can navigate U.S. tariffs

The recent one-month suspension of a 25-per-cent tariff by the United States on most Canadian imports has thrown many Alberta small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into a state of uncertainty. While the intent behind these tariffs seems to be to not only protect American jobs and industries by taxing goods consumed within the U.S., but also to motivate action on border issues such as illegal migration and the movement of the deadly drug fentanyl, the ripple effects are being felt keenly north of the border.

Inspiring, Naturally! The River Valley and the Region’s Future

The article discusses the North Saskatchewan River valley parks system in Edmonton, which is the largest urban park in North America. During the pandemic, the park system provided a much-needed opportunity for people to get outside and enjoy nature. The River Valley Alliance is a not-for-profit organization that aims to create a world-class trail system within the park, and the article argues that supporting this initiative is a smart investment that will pay dividends for years to come. The article also highlights the park's potential for tourism and as an amenity to attract and retain top talent. The RVA plans to complete a 100-kilometre continuous connection from Fort Saskatchewan to Devon, but their funding will run out in 2025, and the article hopes that they will receive additional support to complete the project. The RVA will unveil the regional trail's name later this year, chosen through collaboration with Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers.

AEG Podcast, Ep. 10: The Alberta International Air Show: More Than Just an Air Show

In this episode of AEG’s podcast, host Catherine Brownlee welcomes Richard Skermer, a representative of the Alberta International Air Show, to discuss the event’s mission and goals. Richard explains that the air show is not just a typical barnstormer event, but rather a conference and networking center for the aerospace industry with a rodeo as a backdrop. He emphasizes the importance of attracting human capital to the region for economic diversification and the need to showcase Alberta as a dynamic and forward-thinking destination. Richard also discusses the STEAM initiative and the importance of incorporating arts into STEM education. He explains that the success of the air show is measured in metrics and aligning with corporate and government objectives, making it an investment opportunity for sponsors rather than just a weekend event. The air show is set to take place on an August long weekend this year.
