BY SHONDELL SABAD, SENIOR STRATEGIC ADVISOR AT THE ALBERTA ENTERPRISE GROUP
When people ask what sets Alberta Enterprise Group (AEG) apart, the answer is simple: we don’t just talk – we act.
In a world filled with roundtables, consultations, and delayed decisions, AEG stands out as a coalition of business leaders who do. We put Alberta businesses first, we influence, and when it matters most – we step up.
One of the most impactful examples? AEG joined other leading organizations in intervening at the Supreme Court of Canada against Bill C-69.
This federal legislation, known as the Impact Assessment Act, threatened to centralize control over resource and infrastructure projects, undermining Alberta’s constitutional authority and chilling private investment across Canada. AEG joined the province of Alberta and other concerned stakeholders to oppose it at the highest level.
As highlighted in this Calgary Herald op-ed – Opinion: Business leaders backing Alberta in fight against Bill C-69 | Calgary Herald – AEG gave voice to the concerns of entrepreneurs, investors, and communities who knew this legislation would be disastrous for jobs and economic growth.
And it worked. The Supreme Court ruled that key parts of the Act were unconstitutional. A major victory – not just for Alberta, but for business confidence and Canadian federalism.
In late 2024, many raised serious concerns about Bill C-59 and its potential to chill free speech across this country. We listened. We filed a legal challenge with Bill C-59, calling for the courts to strike down this dangerous legislation.
The Statement of Claim has been filed, and we look forward to the next stage of this action.
This is what AEG membership means: real leadership, real advocacy, real impact.
